Javier playing for el Tri (Mexican National Team)
Javier ‘Chicharo’ Hernandez has quit his job as manager of Chivas' reserve side in order to watch his son, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, play for Mexico in this summer's World Cup in South Africa.
Hernandez, whose son recently signed with Manchester United and will join the team after the World Cup, had asked for leave from the reserve team so he could see his son play with el Tri in South Africa.
“I asked for permission to go to the World Cup, and they didn’t allow me. I had to think about it for two days with my family and kids and I made the decision to quit because I want to go to the World Cup and see my kid play. Work is secondary.”Hernandez said that the decision was helped by once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
"It was difficult, but in the end one is not eternal," he noted. "Institutions remain for lives and one doesn’t. Moments from your life is what makes you take that decision. I understand the institution and that no one is above it, but one is also just here in passing." [end story]
There may be more to this story. Chicharito is due to begin with his new club at the end of July. The original article in the Mexican newspaper said that his entire family would be going with him to England. So, his dad was probably going to quit his job anyway. The younger Hernandez will be making a great wage at United, so I'm sure it won't be a financial hardship for his father to quit his job. And who wouldn't want to see their son playing in the World Cup?
Chicharo's son played with el Tri today and they beat the reigning WC champs, Italy, 2-1. Javier played for 71 minutes, helping in attack, and nearly scoring. Arsenal attacker Carlos Vela scored the first goal, and Alberto Medina added the second. The Azzurri were lackluster at best, and former World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro, also the Italian team captain, was lazy in defense and had difficulty keeping up with Vela and Hernandez.
El Tri will have the honor of playing the first WC match of 2010 against host nation South Africa on June 11th.
OTHER WC NEWS:
"Whewwww!" I'm sure that's what Spain's manager Vicente del Bosque was saying after La Furia Roja managed to squeak by South Korea 1-0 in a warmup friendly for the Cup. There was no power in the game until the 86th minute "Amen" winner by aptly-named Jesus Navas.
Their less-than-impressive performance the other day, just managing to beat Saudia Araba in the 91st minute, has raised some eyebrows...especially the odds-makers'. Spain has been tapped as the favorite after cruising to the Euro 2008 crown in Austria. But recent slip-ups have proved that, although a favorite, the opposing team doesn't care what you're ranked in the world...they are there to win. Their loss to the Americans in the Confed Cup semi-final should have been a "red flag."
American Jozy Altidore "slightly" sprained his ankle in training and might miss the friendly this Saturday against Australia. The medical rep for the US team said he was "day to day." It doesn't sound serious, so I won't worry.
Fabio Capello has signed with the England National Team until 2012. Rumors have been swirling that he was a favorite to replace J-Mo at Inter Milan, but this will quash that. Rafa Benitez, who cleaned out his office at Anfield is now the front-runner for that job. Add Manuel Pellegrini, who was ousted at RM, into the mix. He is now heading the list of candidates for the Anfield job. Is your head spinning yet?
Let me break it down for you:
Inter Milan: Jose Mourinho gone to Madrid; Fabio Capello is a "NO."; Rafa Benitez is a "maybe."
Liverpool: Rafa Benitez gone; Manuel Pellegrini (fired from Madrid) is a "maybe."
Madrid: Manuel Pellegrini gone; J-Mo hired BEFORE Pellegrini was fired.
So...RM fires a Chilean, hires a Portuguese. Inter Milan lets a Portuguese go to Spain, then possibly hires a Spaniard. And Liverpool "mutually agrees" to a Spaniards departure, only to contemplate a Chilean who came from Spain.
Is it just me...or does this seem like a merry-go-round we can't get off?
