The Charlotte Eagles beat Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 Friday night at Charlotte Christian Stadium. The Eagles were without two of their key players, Steward Ceus (GK) and Jorge Herrera (M). Debola Ogunseye (F) opened the scoring in the 54th minute and Brady Bryant (D) finished the night with a header to seal the victory in the 62nd minute. Erik Lefebvre (GK) was the unanimous man of the match with 7 saves while filling in for the injured Ceus. Diego Martins (M) played a huge part in both of the Eagles’ goals with two assists.
The first half ended all square at 0. Ogunseye had some opportunities but couldn’t connect. Both Martins and Lemons had shots on goal as well but Danny Cepero (GK) of the Islanders was there to deny the Eagles. Lefebvre had 3 saves including a goal saving dive to his left off of J.T. Noone’s (F) beautiful bicycle kick. For the most part, the game was evenly matched with play spread out all over the field. Lots of running and high temperatures tested the fitness of both teams.
The second half started off shaky for the Eagles with Darren Toby (M) having to leave the game with an injury; Chris Klotz (M) came in to fill his spot. As the game progressed, Ogunseye continued to test the defenders with his speed and beautiful dribbling. Finally in the 54th minute, Ogunseye raced past his defender, after receiving an assist from Martins, and then dribbled past the keeper for the Eagles’ opening goal. That wasn’t the end of Ogunseye’s beautiful runs, but Bryant scored the next goal after a well-placed corner by Martins. Brian Ombiji (M) and Tishan Hanley (F) both challenged Lefebvre with headers and shots on goal, but the Eagles maintained their shutout to improve their record to 2-2.
The Eagles next home game will be next Friday, May 14 at Charlotte Christian Stadium. The Lady Eagles’ have their home opener at 5:30 versus the Hampton Roads Piranhas while the Men kick off at 8:00 against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. This is the first meeting of the year for the Eagles and Riverhounds.
