Ronny Looks Better in Red

I found this video online of Cristiano.  It's from a piece by British television, ITV.  It follows his 2008 season which led to a Premiership title, Champions League title, World Club Championship, and 22 personal accolades, including the FIFA World Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon d'Or.
It's hard for me to watch because it chronicles the unsettling summer of 2008 when Real Madrid were hankering to buy him and SAF finally said that he "wouldn't sell that mob a virus."  They won out in the summer of 2009 and Ronny has been wearing the boring white of Madrid this season...but he looks better in RED!!!  Madridistas will never sing his praises like the Manchester faithful did...and still do.

It's 11 minutes long.  Enjoy.

Okay...Just This One Time

Piers Morgan, a particularly vitriolic blowhard from The Daily Mail, is a diehard Arsenal fan.  One could say that his hobby is carving up anything remotely related to Manchester United.  Piers' columns have received many a furrowed brow from me over the years, especially when he consistently referred to Cristiano as "pizza-faced."  One could forgive him because his side have struggled in the last five years while United has reaped the rewards of hard work.
But...I have to give Piers props for being honest about his own team.  When United annihilated the Gunners at the Emirates last April in the CL tie, Piers said, "...after the realization that we weren't going to win, and most of the crowd were exiting with their tails between their legs, I sat back and truly enjoyed watching Ronaldo and company play some amazing football."
So, with United once again annihilating the Gunners at the Emirates last week, this is what Piers had to say:

"We were, frankly, pathetically spineless. A horde of mice against a pack of lions. United looked hungrier, nastier and more determined.

Watching Nani ravage our left flank of Denilson and Gael Clichy was like watching a panther toy with two dumb antelopes."

Exactly.  Couldn't have said it better myself. :)

Come on, Marouane!

Marouane Chamakh is looking to move this summer, but I'm not sure I liked his comments that he feels less like a Bordelaise with each match.  I wouldn't think anything of it except for the fact that Bordeaux has lost a 9-point lead in the Ligue 1 standings.  Montpellier has whittled it down to 3, with Bordeaux drawing against Boulogne and losing to Rennes in their last two matches.  I don't think that Arsenal will be so keen on Marouane if he doesn't play well and Bordeaux go on a slide and lose the Ligue 1 title.

Here is an excerpt from the Fox Soccer article:

"My future? Well, I hold all the cards, I have no reason to be under pressure but everyday passing by, I am a little less a Bordeaux player," he revealed.

"My choice is to join Premier League and if I could choose, I will go to Arsenal.
"Bordeaux has brought me so much. I will soon clearly state things so the club can prepare to find my replacement peacefully."
Chamakh is full of praise for Bordeaux boss Laurent Blanc.
"Laurent Blanc has brought us a winning state of mind, he has taught us how to hate defeat," he told L'Equipe.
"Both on mental and physical levels, I am at my best. Three years ago, I was still a little crazy. Now I can manage my efforts, which allows me to be more clear-sighted at the end of the match.
"I have improved, but I can still improve. I am not only happy to play anymore. I have become someone who wants to win. I am more a scorer, but not enough yet. There are too many situations where I still do a pass for a player in a better position." [end story]

hmmmmmm....I can understand Marouane wanting to join an EPL team, but he should play out his remaining days at Bordeaux as a full-fledged member of his team.  Making comments like this does not do him justice, and it's not fair to his team.

How Disappointing

"Judge not, that ye be not judged."  Matthew 7:1.

I'll admit it.  I'm judgmental.  If you read this blog then it would be obvious that I have an opinion on everything and often blast those whom I feel deserve it.  I try to back up my opinions with facts, but the fact remains...I'm judgmental.
So I have decided to call this blog entry, "How Disappointing."  I'm not judging, just tsk tsking...if there's a difference.
John Terry.
I debated about weighing in on this subject because I do not like Chelsea, and never will like Chelsea.  I do, however, like the England National Team, of which John Terry is the captain.
I'm writing this blog because I'm a sports purist.  Always have been, always will be.  When sports "heroes" take it upon themselves to degrade their own sport, I take particular offense to that.
There have been many examples, unfortunately, in recent years.  Pete Rose.  Roger Clemens.  Mark McGwire (that one kills me...I'm a Cardinals fan).  Michael Vick.
And of course I couldn't tsk tsk without mentioning Tiger Woods.  It seems he is addicted to sex, and one would be hard-pressed to find a woman in the State of Florida who hasn't slept with him.  Sick.
What do all of these men have in common?  They were beloved sports heroes.  Cheered on by team faithfuls, and idolized by many young fans.
As I said above, I'm a sports purist.  What does that mean?  I grew up in a baseball family.  My father, uncles, brother, cousins, played baseball.  I played fast-pitch softball.  My father taught me that no matter what I did on the field, if I didn't do it with integrity then I had no business being there in the first place.  If you know the person on the other team were safe, then you don't say otherwise.  Cheating does not elevate you in any way, it only shows your lack of moral character.
So in a roundabout way I'm back to John Terry.  Moral character.
John is embroiled in nasty business right now.  It seems he had an affair with a former teammate's estranged girlfriend (and mother of the teammate's child).  John has been married for three years and has twins with his wife, Toni.  The teammate, up until Friday, was anonymous.  John had fought to keep the identity of himself out of the papers until a judge ruled that everyone in the footy world already knew about the affair and allowed the news organization (loose terminology here...the News of the World) to print their story.
Well, it seems that his teammate, Wayne Bridge, who used to play for Chelsea and still plays with John on the England National Team, didn't know that John was the culprit.  Wayne and his girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel, broke up last summer.  He moved to Manchester to play for City, and Vanessa stayed with their child in London.  So John took it upon himself to keep Vanessa company.  Allegedly she also became pregnant and John paid for an abortion.  Mr. Terry thought all of this would go unnoticed.
But John should know that in Britain, footballers are followed by the paparazzi like they're a rash on their backsides.  The News of the World (a subsidiary of The Sun) took photos of John leaving Vanessa's house...put two and two together...and voila!  So John sought a "super-injunction" citing the paper for violating his right to have a private life.  Mrs. Terry didn't know about the affair until it broke in the newspapers.  So...John is in a heap of trouble.  The public, who pay exhorbitant amounts to watch John play, want his hide for being a lout.  His wife has taken the kids to Dubai to get away from the press (she won't divorce him...he's paid 150,000 GBP per week), and of course Miss Perroncel is looking to cash in on the "I slept with John Terry and ruined his marriage" angle with a 275,000 GBP book deal.  I'm not sure what the book would say other than, Chapter 1...slept with John.  Chapter 2...slept with John...Chapter 3...Had an abortion....Chapter 4...I'm a nobody so somebody please pay me insane amounts of money to tell my story...ad nauseam.

I waited to weigh in on this to let the dust settle and the slime sink to the bottom.  Mrs. Terry is still hiding out (well not really...she's shopping and getting a tan) in Dubai, Wayne Bridge has returned to play...only to lose to Hull City, Ms. PERROncel has now said she won't sell her story (no doubt she was paid hush money from a Terry bank account), and John Terry has been stripped of his England NT captaincy (I applaud that) in favor of Rio Ferdinand , and Terry's Blues now need a win tomorrow to stay ahead of United in the Prem League table. Wheeewwwwww!
This isn't Terry's first controversy.  He is a serial shagger (one time with a 17-yr-old in the back of his Bentley in a car park).  He was caught selling tours of Chelsea's training facility last fall.  His father was caught selling cocaine in December.  His mother and aunt were caught shoplifting 8,000 GBP worth of goods from Marks and Spencer last year.  It seems he hasn't had good role models to form his character.  As far as I'm concerned the only worthwhile thing he's done is to slip on that "banawner" in the CL final in Moscow!
Let's relive that wonderful moment courtesy of youtube:

You know that I love photos and always include some in my blog, but...
I won't post pictures of the offensive people above because that would mean my blog contained photos of Chelscum, Man ***ty, and useless, tiresome, do-nothing WAG whores...I can't be bothered.

The sad part of this is that the Terrys have two beautiful twins, Summer and Georgie, and Bridge and Whatsherface have a four-year-old son.  I can only imagine the talks they will have with the young'uns when they are old enough to read.  "Yes, mummy and da were bad...but you should be a good lad."

No judgments here...only tsk tsking.

Down the Homestretch

With 13 matches left to play in the Barclay's Premier League, every game is crucial, with relegation-avoiding bottom-feeders just looking to scrap some points from the big boys.  United, who trailed leaders Chelsea by 2 points at the beginning of the day, were up against a perennial cellar-dweller, Portsmouth (Pompey).
On a solemn day at Old Trafford, when the Reds and fans remembered the Busby Babes from the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, the possibility of an emotional let-down was in the air.  When the Reds took 40 minutes to score, after having many chances in the first half, the crowd could be forgiven for thinking this might be a long day.  But unlike 2008, when United wore the '58 kit and lost to City, Rooney and company had their sites on the top of the Prem League table.
It was the prolific goal-scorer Rooney, with 23 goals this season, who started off the stampede in the 40th minute with a beautiful header past David James.  Nani, who has had a renaissance or "reNANIssance" in the past six outings took a wicked shot, which ricocheted off two Pompey players and in to the goal.  2-0.   But the Reds weren't done.  With a crowd firmly behind them, as always, Michael Carrick smacked a cracker on goal that scooted in off an opposing player, 3-0.  With a win in their sites, Dimitar Berbatov finessed his way through a crowded box and unleased a cracker...4-0.  How many would the Reds score?  The death blow was delivered when Patrice Evra put a beautiful cross in to the box...but Marc Wilson (Pompey) tried to clear it, and cleared it right into the net!  5-0.  You would think that a 5-0 score is what United are looking for, but left-back Evra had another spin on it:
"We played in the right spirit and it was pleasing to score so many goals. I wasn’t concerned because I knew we could go on and win the game but I was angry that we didn’t score earlier."

Pompey, who are in dire financial trouble, have had four owners this season alone.  Their players are paid irregularly, and the Prem League has stepped in on many occasions to ensure that the club takes care of it's financial obligations, with a large amount of money owed to other clubs for transfers.  Playing under that duress couldn't be easy, so I have to give props to the players for keeping their heads about them.  But today they didn't face fiscal woes, but a team looking to bag an unprecedented fourth-straight Prem League title.  The Reds are on the move...the homestretch is in site and the team that wants it the most will prevail.  Bring.  It.  On.

A SHOUT OUT to Jozy Altidore of Hull City.  The US Nat'l Team striker bagged his first EPL goal, helping to down a struggling City 2-1.
SAD FACE of the day.  My Bordeaux were beaten 4-2 in a rugged road test at Rennes.  Our 9-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table is now only 3.  Come on, Marine et Blanc!

Some pics from the day:

Now if Arsenal would only have the game of their lives tomorrow, I would be happy! :)

6th February, 1958...we will never forget!

6th February, 1958

Tomorrow marks the 52nd anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster that killed 8 Manchester United players and 3 club officials.  The team was returning from Belgrade, where they were playing in the European Championships.  Leaving Munich, the plane crashed on takeoff, killing 23 total.  Known as the Busby Babes, as they were coached by Sir Matt Busby, the team was one of the most promising in the history of Manchester United.
Sir Bobby Charlton, United legend and current director, was one of the survivors.
This is the video link of the first BBC report about the crash...

http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={B4CEE8FA-9A47-47BC-B069-3F7A2F35DB70}&newsid=27541

"The '58 crash is like (US president) John F Kennedy getting killed in November ’63. It’s one of those dates in history for which people can tell you exactly where they were when they heard the news.”

- former United player Pat Crerand

The lost promise of the Busby Babes was emotionally devastating to the club, but it didn't destroy it.  The disaster and rebuilding of the team showed the grittiness of United; that it can't be held down.  The team today still holds true to that philosophy.  Former United star and current AC Milan/LA Galaxy player David Beckham put it best in a recent interview:
"...we scored so many great goals, many of them last minute. But that is just Manchester United – it doesn’t matter which players are involved, you always believe you can win. You might be 2-0 down with a few minutes to go, but the players and the manager never stop believing. That’s just the way the club is."

Sir Bobby Charlton with his 1966 European Footballer of the Year award

Sir Bobby Charlton, who became a United legend, gave a sobering account of the crash and aftermath to MUTV.
He tells of United's dominance in England and Europe and how the crash made the club start over from scratch.  Sir Matt told them it would be 5 years before they would win a major trophy...and they did.  In 1968 when they hoisted the European Cup, the team's renaissance was complete.
But for Charlton the loss of his fellow players was hard to forget, especially Duncan Edwards.  The 21-yr-old half-back was very close to Charlton and even served in the army with him.  Of Edwards, Charlton said,
"He is the only player who has ever made me feel inferior."
Here is Charlton's interview:

How does United remember the crash?  A clock at Old Trafford marks the exact time of the accident.  It is a chilling reminder of the past, but also a testament to United's mettle.  Many trophies and accolades have been won since the Busby Babes put Manchester United on the world map, and the players today carry that banner proudly.  During the 50th anniversary match, the players wore exact replicas of the 1958 kits (see Cristiano below).  When they play Portsmouth tomorrow for the 52nd, the players will be wearing black armbands in remembrance of Walter Crickmer, Tom Curry, Burt Whalley, Eddie Colman, Roger Byrne, Geoff Bent, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Billy Whelan, and Duncan Edwards.
"and the Reds go marching on on on."

Something To Make Me Laugh on a :( Day

I love watching the replays of EPL matches when FSC shows the Skysports Fanzone folks.  Curtis Corbin, who is the Arsenal commentator is hilarious!
Some of his choice comments from the match:
(TV pans to Wenger with a minute to play...Corbin is talking about players they should buy) "No, I won't take you.  In fact, get lost Wenger!!  I wonder if we popped that jacket (downfilled coat) if he would fly away...hssssssssssss"
(Gallas has a chance to score in the box and heads the ball way wide of the goal) "Wonderful defending by Gallas...IT'S THE WRONG END OF THE PITCH!...That was truly some beautiful defending by an Arsenal striker!  He thinks he's playing for United..."
(Talking about how Wenger doesn't think they should buy anyone...when Arsenal desperately need a striker)  "Well if Sol Campbell (A 35-yr-old troublemaking hasbeen that Arsenal got for a song) has been signed then there's certainly hope for a bloke like me!  I could play midfield!"

Check out the highlights of the goals with the two commentators.  Skysports enlists these guys to do the color...one each from the opposing teams.  The banter is usually hilarious.

Hope your day has been better than mine.
